Building & Application
Safinah provides authoritative, expert advice on the whole chain of activities that links ships, structures, coatings and the environment.
There is a need for a different approach to coating management from design through new build and into operation and maintenance.
Coating activities in shipbuilding, repair and other major construction activities are increasingly creating a bottleneck. Re-work and touch up can account for between 15 - 40% of the total coating budget in shipyards.
This level of re-work would not be tolerated in other production processes.
We are confident that these bottlenecks and re-working can be reduced if coating activities are considered early enough.
Our experience shows that a well planned strategy integrating the coating process into the design and fabrication process can reduce overall man-hours and improve productivity.
Case study
- The client:
- A shipyard in North America
- The project:
- To assess all aspects of its coating activities at both pre-production and production stages.
- The outcomes:
- Safinah carried out a Coating Activity Review and provided immediate feedback.
- They developed short/medium and long-term action plans identifying priority areas. The yard was benchmarked against yards worldwide and local competitors in terms of productivity and cost for the overall parameters of performance.
- The yard repeated the exercise three years later to check their progress in key areas and to identify a new set of priorities after significant investment in the facility.
- The work identified areas of improvement such as major man-hour savings, improvements in the reporting systems using computerised systems and having coating input at the design stage for the development of a suitable coating strategy.
