Decommissioning

Safinah provides authoritative, expert advice on the whole chain of activities that links ships, structures, coatings and the environment.

At Safinah we understand the challenges facing ship owners, shipyards and classification societies in complying with IACS, IMO and SOLAS rules and regulations for coating performance.

Our unique mix of expertise in coating, shipbuilding and naval architecture enables us to support and guide decommissioning programmes from an early stage. We undertake training and field support until a knowledge and skills base has been developed to implement the proposed process.

Safinah has been involved in European Commission studies to look at decommissioning of ships in Europe.

Case study

The client:
European Commission
The project:
Safinah worked with two other companies, Det Norske Veritas and Appledore International Ltd., to identify the potential for decommissioning ships in various sites throughout Europe.
Safinah made a significant contribution to the end of life scenarios for the coatings on board the vessels as well as providing input to all other aspects of the project.
The outcomes:
A number of potential sites and scenarios were identified indicating that it would be possible to decommission ships in an environmentally sustainable manner in Europe.
The report has been widely disseminated and referenced in subsequent studies. europa.eu.int/comm/enterprise/maritime/maritime_industrial/studies.htm
